En estas fechas en las que todos hacemos balance del año parémonos también a reflexionar sobre este récord: en el 2016 se alcanza la cifra anual de muertos en el Mediterráneo más alta jamás registrada.
Han sido muchas las noticias que hemos escuchado a lo largo del año sobre guerras y conflictos en Siria, Afganistán, Irak, Nigeria, Eritrea… Son países donde la vida es un infierno y la violencia se ensaña con los más débiles. Esto no debería sólo impactarnos, sino también ayudarnos a comprender por qué estas personas se lanzan al Mediterráneo buscando un futuro digno aunque les cueste la vida.
También ha sido portada: “Al menos 239 inmigrantes desaparecen en el Mediterráneo en dos naufragios”. El Mundo, 03/11/2016. “El olvidado naufragio que dejó 500 muertos en el mar Mediterráneo y nadie investigó”. BBC, 8/12/2016.
El total, más de 5.000 personas que huían del infierno de sus países encontraron la muerte en el Mediterráneo, siendo una gran parte de las víctimas niños. Personas con nombre y apellido, familia, amigos y muchos sueños que no van a poder cumplir. Personas con los mismos Derechos Fundamentales que tú y que yo.
Según la IOM - UN Migration Agency, el año pasado en torno a un millón de personas cruzaron el Mediterráneo y se registraron 3.771 víctimas. Este año siendo el número de llegadas a Europa bastante inferior (358.403) el número de muertes en el mar se ha incrementado en un 33%.
Las causas del alarmante incremento de muertes este año son múltiples, pero parece que están relacionadas con la peor calidad de las embarcaciones utilizadas por los traficantes, las inclemencias meteorológicas y las tácticas utilizadas por los traficantes para evitar ser detectados por las autoridades: entre otras, está el envío de un gran número de embarcaciones de manera simultánea, lo que dificulta el trabajo de los equipos de rescate.

These days where all of us take stock of the year, we should also think about this: 2016 left the highest number of deaths in the Mediterranean.
We have heard through the year a lot of news about wars and conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Eritrea... There, life is like hell and violence hits the weakest people. This should not only impact us but also help us to understand why these people go to the Mediterranean looking for a decent future even if it costs them their lives.
We also read: “At least 239 migrants believed drowned in Mediterranean, says U.N.” The Washington-Post 11/03/2016. “More than 500 people are believed to have died, but there has been no inquiry into the deaths”. BBC, 12/06/2016.
More than 5,000 people running away of the hell of their countries were found dead in the Mediterranean Sea in 2016, being children a large part of them. People with names, family, friends and many dreams to fulfill; people with the same Fundamental Rights as you and me.
According to IOM - UN Migration Agency, last year, more than a million people crossed the Mediterranean, 3,771 casualties were recorded. This year the number of arrivals in Europe has decreased (358,403) but the number of deaths in the sea has increased by 33%.
The causes for the alarming rise in deaths this year are multiple but it seems to be related to the declining quality of the vessels used by human trafficker , the inclement weather and the tactics used by human trafficker to avoid detection by the authorities, like sending large numbers of embarkations simultaneously, which makes the work of rescuers more difficult.
